What we cover.

Every topic in the Primary 4 / 5 / 6 / PSLE Upper Primary Science syllabus, taught in the order that builds skill. We refresh the materials every year against the latest SEAB exam reports.

·
Diversity — Living & Non-Living
Classifying living things, fungi and bacteria, materials. Pri 4 foundations that PSLE 'Science of Things' loves.
·
Cycles — Plants & Animals
Life cycles of plants, animals, mosquitos. Reproductive parts and pollination — common PSLE open-ended.
·
Cycles — Water & Matter
Three states of matter, water cycle, evaporation, condensation, dew, fog — and the right vocabulary for each.
·
Systems — Plant & Animal
Plant transport (xylem, phloem), human digestive, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal & muscular systems.
·
Systems — Cells & Electrical
Cell parts, cell organisation. Electrical systems — circuits, conductors, insulators.
·
Interactions — Forces
Frictional, magnetic, gravitational, elastic, spring forces. The free-body-style explanations PSLE rewards.
·
Interactions — Living & Environment
Food chains, food webs, ecosystems, adaptation, decomposers.
·
Energy — Light, Heat, Sound
Sources, transfer, absorption, reflection — including the open-ended favourites about shadows.
·
Energy — Energy from Food & Energy Conversion
Photosynthesis, energy chains, energy efficiency.
·
Open-ended answer structure
Claim → Evidence → Reasoning. The single biggest mark-saver in PSLE Science. Drilled weekly.
·
Vocabulary & precision
Exact words PSLE markers reward — 'transferred to' vs 'gives off', 'reflects' vs 'absorbs'.
·
Diagram interpretation
How to read schematic diagrams without overthinking. Clean labelling rules.
·
Experiment design — fair test
Independent / dependent / controlled variables. Drilled with real PSLE-style stems.
·
Mock PSLE papers
Timed papers from Term 2 of P6 — feedback available on request.
How we teach it

Methodology.

The methods we teach with — applied across the term, calibrated to where each student needs them most.

01
Concept-first, not memory-first
Memorising a topic is fine until the question is phrased differently. We teach the underlying mechanism — once the concept is clear, the open-ended answer writes itself.
02
CER answer structuring
Claim, Evidence, Reasoning. Every weekly homework is marked against this skeleton. Your child stops losing marks for 'be more specific'.
03
Vocabulary drills
PSLE Science is a vocabulary subject in disguise. Weekly word-precision practice — five-mark answers depend on five-mark phrasing.
04
Diagram-led explanation
Forces, electrical circuits, water cycle — drawn first, written second. The diagram is the working.
05
Targeted mocks for the open-ended
From P6 Term 2, weekly 30-minute open-ended sets. Returned with model answers compared line-by-line to your child's.
06
Calibrated to the class
Every class has its own dynamic — different mix of strengths, gaps and pace. Pacing, examples and topic emphasis are customised to the class in front of us, so each session pulls its weight rather than running from a fixed script.
Where students lose marks

Common pitfalls
& how we fix them.

Most lost marks are habit, not knowledge. We track them, name them, and drill them out.

!
Open-ended answers without the Claim→Evidence→Reasoning chain
'Iron is magnetic' earns 1 of 3. Full: claim → evidence (attracted to permanent magnets, can be magnetised) → reasoning (used in bells, cranes). Fix: CER structure (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) drilled weekly until students write in this order automatically.
!
Heat-transfer vocabulary precision
'Heat moves up the spoon' vs 'heat is conducted along the spoon'. Markers penalise loose language. Fix: weekly vocabulary drills with exact PSLE phrasing cards: 'transferred by conduction', 'lost through radiation', etc.
!
Food-web and circuit-diagram arrows drawn backwards
Food-web arrows point 'to' the organism that eats; circuit arrows show current flow. Students frequently reverse them. Loses 2-3 marks per diagram. Fix: a fixed rule drilled in one focused P5 lesson, then checked in every diagram review thereafter.
!
'Why X but not Y' — missing the contrast
Question: 'Why does copper conduct electricity but rubber doesn't?' Student answers 'copper conducts because...' but forgets to explain why rubber doesn't. Loses comparison marks. Fix: comparison-template sentence: 'X happens because [property]. Y does not because [opposite property].'
!
Fair-test answers incomplete — missing what is measured
'Change the light' is incomplete; 'change the light and measure the plant's growth' is complete. Most-cited PSLE mark-loss. Fix: a checklist on every fair-test question: what changes, what is measured, what stays the same — all three must appear.
Sample technique

Why your child loses marks on the 'shadow' open-ended.

Classic PSLE question: "Why does the shadow on the wall grow larger when the lamp is moved closer to the toy?" Most students answer with what happens ("the shadow grows larger"). They've already lost the open-ended marks. Our students answer the why: light travels in straight lines (claim); when the lamp moves closer, the angle at which the light spreads past the toy widens (evidence); a wider spread of blocked light hits the wall over a larger area, producing a larger shadow (reasoning). Three-line structure, two clean diagrams, full marks.

Inside the lesson

What a typical lesson looks like.

No surprises. The structure is the same week to week — students settle in fast.

  1. 0–10 min · Quick recap of last week's most-confused question.
  2. 10–30 min · Concept walkthrough — usually 2 worked examples with diagrams drawn live.
  3. 30–55 min · Vocabulary & phrasing drill on today's topic.
  4. 55–80 min · Open-ended answer practice. Students write, teacher walks the room and corrects work where possible.
  5. 80–95 min · Common mistakes review. Personalised homework set.
  6. After class · Marked homework returned with topic-specific comments.
Real student · Real result

"Genie Education Hub is easily the best tuition centre in the west. Teacher Michelle is super professional and outstanding in her teaching. For the past 2 years I’ve enjoyed her class — she engages the class with timed practices and conversations. She is very patient and passionate in teaching."

FAQ

Common questions.

Is your PSLE Science tuition aligned to the latest MOE syllabus?
Yes. Materials are reviewed against the current PSLE syllabus and most recent SEAB exam reports each year.
Do you cover Pri 3 Science?
We start from Pri 4. The Pri 3 syllabus is mostly observational; we get involved when the syllabus starts demanding structured explanations.
How is Science different from Math at Genie?
Science is more about precise language and answer structure than calculations. Our methodology reflects that — vocabulary drills and CER are weekly fixtures.
My child knows the content but loses marks on open-ended. Can you help?
That's the most common case we see. Open-ended structure is taught in every lesson, every week, with worked answers compared line-by-line.
Can I sign up for Science only, or do I need to take Math too?
Science only is fine. The 10% discount kicks in if you take both — most parents do.
What about Higher Chinese or English tuition?
We don't offer language tuition. Just Math and Science.
Do you have weekend slots at Bukit Batok and Yishun?
Yes. Saturdays are our most popular slot — they fill from October each year. WhatsApp early.
How long is each PSLE Science lesson?
90 minutes for upper primary. Long enough to teach a concept properly, short enough to keep attention.
Will my child get individual feedback or a generic class report?
Individual. Every weekly assignment is marked with a personal note — not a class average.
Where is your nearest PSLE Science centre to Khatib or Northpoint?
Yishun branch — 417 Yishun Ave 11 #01-339, a short bus ride from Khatib or Yishun MRT and 5 minutes from Northpoint City. Yishun branch
Where in Bukit Batok are you exactly?
Blk 265 East Ave 4 — a short bus ride from Bukit Batok or Hillview MRT. Bukit Batok branch
How do I book a free PSLE Science trial?
WhatsApp 9181 7689 with your child's level. We'll confirm the next slot at your preferred branch.
Can my child catch up if they join mid-term?
Yes — we can arrange short 1-to-1 bridging sessions to fast-track new joiners up to where the current class is. Most students catch up in 2–3 sessions, then slot into the regular class without falling behind.
