Ask about the butterfly life cycle at dinner and you get five minutes of detail. On the worksheet: "it changes". P3 Science is a child's first encounter with having to write what they know, and almost nobody arrives able to do it.
"But I said it! I just didn't write all of it down."
We start the answering habit in the first year it exists — full sentences, the right word for the right thing, and saying why as well as what. Gently, because P3 marks do not decide anything. The habit does.
Yes — that's my child →Each term covers 8 weekly lessons — we run 8-week cycles rather than following the 10-week MOE school terms. The 10% bundle rate applies when you take 2 or more subjects — any combination, not a fixed pairing. Missed lessons are credited into the next term — credit applies for public holidays, school holidays, official school activities, and absences with a medical certificate.
Every topic in the Primary 3 Science syllabus, taught in the order that builds skill. Refreshed yearly against MOE syllabus updates.
What makes something living, what living things need to survive, and how they grow and reproduce.
Classifying by observable characteristics, and using a simple key to sort.
Properties of materials and why a material is chosen for a job. The first taste of fair testing.
Butterfly, beetle, mosquito, chicken and frog — stages, order, and the differences between them.
Germination through to seed dispersal, and what a plant needs at each stage.
Magnetic and non-magnetic materials, poles, attraction and repulsion, and making a magnet.
P3 is the first year of Science. We start the answer-structure habit here, gently, before it is worth marks.
The methods we teach with — applied across the term, calibrated to where each student needs them most.
A child who understands why a caterpillar eats constantly remembers the word "larva". The reverse does not work.
P3 is where this is cheap to teach. By P5 it is a repair job under time pressure.
Magnets and materials are taught with materials in hand. P3 is too early to learn Science only from a page.
"Attract" not "stick". "Melt" not "go soft". Precision built as vocabulary, not as exam technique.
First-year Science generates a lot of questions. Ten is small enough that every one gets asked.
Set weekly and reviewed together, so misconceptions are caught while they are still small.
Most lost marks are habit, not knowledge. At P3 the habits are still soft — which is exactly why it is the cheapest year to fix them.
"Why did the ice melt?" → "heat". True, and worth nothing on a P5 paper. Fix: every answer written as a full sentence from the first term, before any marks depend on it.
"The magnet sticks to it" instead of "attracts". Harmless at P3, expensive at PSLE. Fix: a running word list, corrected in the moment rather than at the end of the topic.
Learned as a list of names rather than a sequence with reasons. Fix: stages drawn and re-drawn, with what changes at each one.
A classic P3 misconception — plants get classified as non-living. Fix: taught against the survival characteristics, not against intuition.
"Small class size really matters. My child went from struggling silently in his old centre to actually asking questions in class within a month."
P3 is a new programme, so these are the questions parents are asking us first.
P3 is the first year Science is taught at all, so nobody is behind. It is worth it if your child struggles to write down what they clearly know — that gap is the whole game at PSLE.
